ヴィチェンツァと日本──時を超えて交わる二つの地

 1585年7月9日。ポルトガル、スペイン、イタリアを公式に巡る旅の途中、4人の若き日本人が一夜だけヴィチェンツァに立ち寄りました。彼らは「天正遣欧少年使節」の一行であり、日本から初めて西洋へ派遣された公式外交使節団の若き担い手たちでした。

 彼らの短い滞在は街の記憶に深く刻まれ、いまもオリンピコ劇場の前室に残る壁画に、その姿が描かれています。この劇場は、当時すでにヨーロッパ中で名高く、1585年3月に開場したばかりでした。それから300年以上の時を経て、あたかも少年使節たちの訪問に応えるかのように、ヴィチェンツァ出身の飛行家アルトゥーロ・フェッラリンが、ガブリエーレ・ダヌンツィオと下位 春吉が発案した「ローマ〜東京間の飛行」に挑戦します。1920年、二翼機で敢行されたこの前人未到の飛行は、約4か月をかけてローマから東京へ。到着した彼を迎えたのは、日本の感動と歓喜に満ちた熱烈な祝賀でした。

 こうして、イタリアと日本の間には、深い友情と共感が今なお息づいています。

Vicenza and Japan — Two Lands Connected Across Time

On July 9, 1585, during an official journey through Portugal, Spain, and Italy, four young Japanese boys stopped in Vicenza for just one night. They were part of the Tenshō Embassy, the first official Japanese diplomatic mission ever sent to the West. Though brief, their visit left a lasting impression. A fresco in the antechamber of the Teatro Olimpico still depicts their presence — a memory etched into the city’s cultural fabric. This theater, already renowned throughout Europe at the time, had just opened in March 1585.

Over 300 years later, as if in response to that historic encounter, Arturo Ferrarin, an aviator from Vicenza, took on the challenge of the Rome–Tokyo flight, an idea proposed by Gabriele D’Annunzio and Harukichi Shōi. In 1920, Ferrarin made this unprecedented journey in a biplane, flying from Rome to Tokyo over the course of four months. His arrival was met with overwhelming joy and heartfelt celebration in Japan.

This shared history continues to inspire a deep friendship and mutual respect between Italy and Japan to this day.
