Vicenza and Japan — Two Lands Connected Across Time

On July 9, 1585, during an official journey through Portugal, Spain, and Italy, four young Japanese boys stopped in Vicenza for just one night. They were part of the Tenshō Embassy, the first official Japanese diplomatic mission ever sent to the West. Though brief, their visit left a lasting impression. A fresco in the antechamber of the Teatro Olimpico still depicts their presence — a memory etched into the city’s cultural fabric. This theater, already renowned throughout Europe at the time, had just opened in March 1585.

Over 300 years later, as if in response to that historic encounter, Arturo Ferrarin, an aviator from Vicenza, took on the challenge of the Rome–Tokyo flight, an idea proposed by Gabriele D’Annunzio and Harukichi Shōi. In 1920, Ferrarin made this unprecedented journey in a biplane, flying from Rome to Tokyo over the course of four months. His arrival was met with overwhelming joy and heartfelt celebration in Japan.

This shared history continues to inspire a deep friendship and mutual respect between Italy and Japan to this day.

🎶 Join us for this special music event inspired by that history. Experience the story of Vicenza and Japan — told through music. 🎶

The Castle in the Clouds

Mantua and Japan

A musical event curated by Floriano Terrano

Featuring the voice of Tomomi Ezoe

📅 Saturday, March 22, 2025 – 4:00 PM

📍 Ducal Palace, Atrio Arcieri, Piazza Sordello, 40, 46100 Mantua, MN

Mantua and Japan share a history that spans 440 years. It was the summer of 1585 when the first Japanese travelers to set foot in Europe also visited Mantua, along with other Italian cities. In Mantua, they explored numerous places, including the Abbey of San Benedetto in Polirone, where an ancient plaque still commemorates this extraordinary visit by travelers from a distant land. Beyond history, many parallels connect Mantua and Japan, particularly Mantua and its twin city, Omihachiman in Shiga Prefecture. Both cities are situated near lakes, with castles overlooking the water as San Giorgio Castle in Mantua and Azuchi Castle in Omihachiman now in ruins. Another shared tradition is rice cultivation, which is documented in Mantua since at least the late 15th century, as well as the presence of lotus flowers, which have flourished in Mantua’s lakes for at least a century.

These connections have inspired the musical event "The Castle in the Clouds: Mantua and Japan", a journey through the landscapes and atmospheres of the Land of the Rising Sun.

“To pass on to the next generation”

Tomomi Ezoe (江副知美), soprano

Mari Fujino (藤野まり), piano

A concert of Japanese music will be held in Faenza on 15 April 2023 at 17:00 at the MIC International Museum of Ceramics. The title is: “Denshō 伝承. To pass on to the next generation”. Soprano Tomomi Ezoe, piano Mari Fujino.

What are the similarities between two very different arts such as music and ceramics, what analogies between the art of hearing and visual art? The musician and the ceramist both have a legacy from the past: that of studying and practicing the arts which the teachers have left them as a legacy. Both the path of the musician and the path of the ceramist are long and tiring. The importance and the value of the artistic heritage are felt both in the music and in the ceramics and the Japanese word denshō (伝承) means precisely "to pass on to future generations".The concert is a musical journey through the real and painted landscapes of Japan and also intends to be a celebration of the long and fruitful relationship of friendship and art between Japan and Faenza, since 1979 when Faenza and Japanese city of Toki became sister cities.  Toki itself is famous for its ancient school of artistic ceramics.

「Small sky - Piccolo Cielo -

Teatro Tempio, viale Caduti in Guerra 196,  Modena

"Piccolo Cielo - Chiisana sora" is a concert that takes its name from a piece by the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996), a musician who deeply blends his Japanese roots with Western musical models. The concert is by two Japanese musicians Tomomi Ezoe, soprano, and Mari Fujino, pianist, who have chosen to live in Italy for their great love for music and for Italian culture.
Italy and Japan are two distant and very different countries which however have a long distance love relationship.
In fact the first mention of Japan in the western world is by the Venetian Marco Polo, who wrote about the island of Cipangu in his book "Il Milione" at the end of the thirteenth century. Cipangu was very rich in gold and pearls, inhabited by beautiful and refined people.
Since long time ago, the Bel Paese and the Rising Sun have "met" numerous and significant times, up to the current mutual relationship of friendship and esteem.

Autumn in Japanese music

With a lecture about Autumn in Japanese culture by Floriano Terrano

Genoa and Far East: a very old relationship. It has started at least since 1298, when Marco Polo was imprisoned in the prison of Palazzo San Giorgio. There he dictated his stories to his cellmate Rustichello da Pisa and his very famous book Il Milione aka The Travels of Marco Polo was born. The Travels of Marco Polo made European people know about China and the other countries of Far East, Japan included. In fact Marco Polo was the first to mention Japan in Western history.

The relationship between Genoa and Far East continues deeply in the last decades of 19th century, when the Genoan engraver and painter Edoardo Chiossone has lived in Japan until death. Before his death, he sent to Genoa his large collection of Japanese art works which will later become the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art.

With a lecture about Autumn in Japanese culture by Floriano Terrano, a concert of Japanese music dedicated to autumn culture in Japan, a country that celebrates the beauty and the malincholy of fall as a collective custom.

Japon mon amour

How France discovered Japan
and spread Japonisme through the world

«These simple Japanese people live in nature as they were flowers themselves». We read these words in a touched letter by Van Gogh to his brother Théo. It was in 1888 and the coloured palette of the artist was lighted up by the sun of Provence so much far from Japanese sun, the Rising Sun which at that time was beginning to set in open and “conquered” Japan where trade and traders from the West ran about.
Van Gogh didn’t ever go to Japan. Also, Bracquemond, Manet, Monet, Degas didn’t go to Japan even if they were the first people in the mid-19th century to be suffering from that illness with no recovery now called Japonisme in art. Nevertheless distance is a mutual condition of man not of artist and above all for Impressionists.
Since some years before the end of sakoku (鎖国 "locked country") – the isolationism of Japan during Edo-Tokugawa period (1603 - 1867) – the first Japanese ukiyo-e (浮世絵 “pictures of the floating world") woodblock prints began to circulate in Paris. These prints were some of the most important detonators of coloured explosion of Impressionism both for portraits and for landscape paintings.
Japanese art was immediate and refined in the eyes of Impressionists and it was profoundly and totally suitable for their painting style. Artists and patrons of Impressionism were the first collectors of Japanese prints and crafts objects. Japanese prints which Monet began to collect since 1871 in his house of Giverny constitute nowadays one of the most significant collections of Japan art. In works by Monet there are so many references to Japan. He had been above all enchanted by marvellous and dreamlike red humpback Japanese bridges called in Japanese taikobashi (太鼓橋 “drum bridge”) or poetically tsukibashi (月橋 “moon bridge”). In the garden of Giverny there is a green Japanese bridge which is not red as Japanese bridges are. This bridge is like an apparition which develops and changes in half-light in Monet’s last paintings.
Anyway France’s love for Japan is not only concerning art and Japanese prints but it’s also about literature, music and cinema and it originated many profound and reciprocal influences among Japanese and French artists. This mutual love between France and Japan concerns even food, fashion, language.
France loves Japan a lot. One of the biggest manga café in the world is placed in Paris. French people are in fact the main readers of manga comics after Japanese people. Japonisme is still alive and it turns to new models with the same old emotion.
Japan loves France as well. A perfect copy of Monet’s garden in his house in Giverny was built at Kitagawa, a small village of Shikoku Island…and to think that French artist got inspired just by traditional Japanese gardens to make his own garden! Tokyo Tower (東京タワー) in Japan’s capital is modeled after Eiffel Tower and it is almost a coloured copy made in Japan six meters higher than the French model.
Musical Impressionism by Claude Debussy partially took its cue from Japanese pentatonic music. On the cover of the 1905 edition of La Mer there is in fact the image of The Great Wave off Kanagawa (神奈川沖浪裏, Kanagawa Oki Nami Ura, 1829–32) by Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎, 1760 - 1849), a copy of which is also in Monet’s house in Giverny. Recently in Japan renowned singer and actor Miwa Akihiro (美輪明宏) performed many chansons in Japanese like for example "Non, je ne regrette rien" by immortal Edith Piaf.
Takada Kenzō (高田賢三) – the most important Japanese fashion designer and author of perfumes –moved to Paris when he was very young and opened his first boutique Jungle Jap there in 1970. After all Paris and Provence are among the main dream places of romantic Japanese people. Just the same Japanese tourists who don’t know at all to look a little at themselves while they gape at Impressionist paintings.
