Shujō onie: The ‘Good’ Demons That Ward Off Evil

On a late-autumn afternoon, when sunlight still breaks through the cold, I met Mr. Matsumoto—who had come to Milan to introduce shujō onie (修正鬼会) to Italy for the first time—along with members of the Japanese delegation.

Shujō onie is a sacred ritual that has been passed down for over a thousand years on the Kunisaki Peninsula. It features oni 鬼 ("demon", "ogre") believed to bring good fortune in the coming New Year, and is known for being performed by monks of Tennen-ji Temple who take on the role of the oni.

What kind of ritual is shujō onie, and what are its origins?

Shujō onie was born from the fusion of two ancient traditions: shujō-e (修正会), a New Year ritual conducted to “set in order” and purify the opening days of the year, and tsuina (追儺), a court ceremony intended to drive away evil spirits. Because both were held during the same period, they gradually merged over many centuries. Although no documents clearly identify when this fusion occurred, surviving ritual implements suggest that it had already taken shape by the early Edo period (1603–1868).

Where is this ritual performed today?

Shujō onie is conducted at three temples: Tennen-ji, Iwato-ji, and Jōbutsu-ji. At Tennen-ji, it is held on the seventh day of the lunar calendar.

How long does the ritual last?

At Tennen-ji, monks begin chanting sutras at noon, and the oni rituals continue until around 11 p.m. At the other temples, the ceremony lasts throughout the night. After the main rites, participants visit houses throughout the village, and the ritual concludes at dawn.

Why do Buddhist monks take on the form of oni, beings often associated with evil or monsters?

On the Kunisaki Peninsula, oni are not regarded as evil beings, but as manifestations of the Buddha. In Japanese culture, oni possess mysterious powers and are not only bringers of calamity, but can also act as messengers of the gods or bearers of good fortune. According to local tradition, ascetic mountain practitioners who trained in rugged terrain revered oni as supernatural beings who protected the mountains.

Since Shujō Onie is held around the Lunar New Year, is it a ritual to pray for good fortune? Is there a connection to the Setsubun bean-throwing ceremony called mamemaki (豆撒き)?

Yes, shujō onie is a ritual for auspicious blessings. Prayers are offered for the prosperity of the temples, good health, peace, and abundant harvests.

Bean-throwing (mamemaki) derives from the court ritual of tsuina, so one could say they are “distant relatives.” However, the content of the two ceremonies differs greatly.

Do many tourists still visit today? Do they participate as a religious experience? Are there young people as well?

Yes, many visitors come every year. Not all attend out of religious devotion, but many are drawn by the spirit and profound meaning of shujō onieYes, many young people participate as well; amid the ritual’s intense rhythms, both body and spirit are warmed, and participants are enveloped in a powerful sense of exhilaration.

Are there written records describing the ritual’s proceedings?

Six scrolls known as onie-shiki (鬼会式) have been preserved, detailing the structure of the ritual and the sutras that are chanted. However, the physical movements and gestures of the ceremony are still transmitted orally.

Please tell us about the costumes and tools used. Are masks worn?

There are formal ritual garments, though they cannot always be transported due to safety concerns.Oni carry wooden axes, swords, and torches, and use an implement called a kōzuibō (香水棒), which symbolically represents water. The oldest traceable roots of existing oni masks are said to derive from a mask at Reisen-ji Temple, modeled after an older mask from the Bunmei era (1469–1487). Styles vary by region. The masks of Bungotakada show strong influence from artisans who created Buddhist statues, and they also share similarities with masks from other East Asian cultures, such as those of Indonesia.

Does shujō onie share common elements with kagura, shinto ritual ceremonial dance?

Yes, it does. For example, similar instruments and ritual tools are used, and there are similarities in the repeated movements. On Kunisaki Peninsula, kagura is considered a fusion of Iwato Kagura and satokagura. In Iwato Kagura, oni appear and dance powerfully; when four oni dance simultaneously, the movements are said to be more intense than in ordinary kagura.

Do the oni of Kunisaki carry kanabō (金棒 "metal club") typically associated with Japanese oni?

The image of oni wielding iron clubs originates in Buddhist art transmitted from China—for example, the demons of Buddhist hells carry such clubs. The oni of Kunisaki, however, are different. The black oni (ara-oni), for instance, holds a sword symbolizing Fudō Myōō in one hand and a torch in the other.

What symbolic meaning does fire hold?

Fire is a vital element symbolizing purification and protection from epidemics and natural disasters.

Oni are frightening yet protective. Do they serve an apotropaic (protective) function?

Since ancient times, oni have symbolized the power to ward off evil. The history of onigawara (鬼瓦)—roof tiles bearing oni faces—extends back more than 1,400 years. Artifacts excavated from the Iizuka site in Kunisaki City include objects inscribed with the character for “oni,” believed to have functioned like protective talismans. Although oni originated on the Asian continent, they developed uniquely in Japan, acquiring human traits—even the ability to speak. This contrasts with the Chinese word gui (鬼), which refers to ghosts.

In Italy, despite cultural differences, demons are not always depicted as purely terrifying but sometimes as comical or realistic figures—such as the demons in Dante’s Divine Comedy. Do Japanese oni also have a humorous side?

For many Japanese people, the most familiar oni appear in folktales such as Momotarō. They resemble ogres from Western fairy tales—supernatural beings who eat people—yet they also possess human personalities. In some ways they are honest, and they can be defeated. When they lose, they cry. With the arrival of Buddhism, continental oni and Japanese oni were often treated as the same, but originally, Japanese oni referred to invisible, supernatural beings—entities with a kind of divinity. In Kunisaki, oni are regarded directly as Buddhas. As Buddhism blended with indigenous beliefs, ordinary people came to understand Buddhism not only through scriptures, but also through stories associated with oni.

In today’s society, dominated by social media and fleeting information, does such an ancient ritual still hold meaning? Can it survive into the future?

Shujō onie endures because it offers an experience that can never be conveyed digitally: the heat of the torches, the smell of smoke, ancient reverberations, and the overwhelming presence of the oni.It is a tradition that has continued for over a thousand years, and preserving it requires not only faith but also a commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage. Thanks to the dedication of local communities, it will continue to be passed down to future generations.

[Explanatory Note]

Kunisaki Peninsula, located in Ōita Prefecture (Kyushu), is known as Rokugō Manzan (六郷満山) and is the birthplace of one of Japan’s oldest forms of shinbutsu-shūgō (神仏習合)—the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism. Centered around the deeply forested Mount Futago, numerous temples are scattered throughout the region. Since ancient times, it has been a place where continental Chinese culture and Yamato culture intersected.

Though it may appear remote at first glance, Kunisaki was in fact a crucial crossroads that greatly influenced the formation of Japanese culture, giving rise to many innovative religious practices and cultural traditions.

Photo by Kioku Co., Ltd.

Photo by Kioku Co., Ltd.

Nihon Isan

Japanese Heritage

Duration: 2024 May - September

Location: Mabic, Maranello (Modena), Italy

By Floriano Terrano

Four events on the theme of Japanese culture will be held at Mabic, Maranello. They are held twice in the evening and twice in the afternoon. Japan has recently entered an unprecedented era of inbound tourism, partly due to the yen being very weak against foreign currencies. Overtourism by foreigners to Japan has caused congestion problems on the small streets of Kyoto, and various problems are a challenge at Mt Fuji and other tourist destinations. But Japan's attractions are not limited to its tourist attractions - there are still many cultural treasures that have been carefully preserved for centuries, sometimes millennia. The Japanese Heritage is a programme developed by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. Its list includes some of Japan's most important places, buildings, works of art and cultural heritage, and covers a wide range of craftsmanship and culinary excellence.

Below is the schedule of events:

- Saturday, 25th May, 17:30, Mabic conference room

- Saturday, 22nd June, 21:00, Piazzetta Nelson Mandela, outside Mabic

- Saturday 27th July, 21:00, outside Piazzetta Nelson Mandela, Mabic

- Saturday 28th September, 16:00, Mabic conference room

As a finale to the event, a photography exhibition by the Maranello photography circle BLOW UP will be held. Since last year's event, a thriving cooperation has developed between the two groups.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition, which will take place from 21 September, will be followed by a 'children's singing concert' by Japanese soprano Tomomi Ezoe. This will be followed by a reception with sake, Japanese tea and Japanese sweets.

Banshō – The evening bell

Mabic, Maranello, 21st September – 30th November 2019

The relationship between Maranello and Japan continues also in 2019 with the autumnal meetings on Japanese culture by Floriano Terrano. The meeting place will be Mabic new town library by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, winner of the 2019 Pritzker Prize. Mabic is a space traditionally linked to Japan because of its symbolic style inspired by traditional Japanese architecture with a contemporary eye. The title of this year's festival is “晩鐘 Banshō - The evening bell”. Banshō is literally "the evening bell", i.e. the ringing of the bell bonshō (梵鐘) of Buddhist temples that announces the beginning of the evening, time both for meditation and for amorous encounters. The dominant theme of this year's cycle of meetings will be the spirituality of the Land of the Rising Sun in its various artistic forms, the indigenous religion of Shintoism and the Chinese and Korean introduction. Contemporary Japanese society, even if it is hypermodern and hyper-technological, continues to have ancient and traditional rituals and occasions of both Buddhism and Shintoism religions in everyday life. A Japanese traditional saying sums up the life of the Japanese, inextricably linked to the rituals of Shintoism and Buddhism: "Born Shinto, die Buddhist". Just like the ringing of the evening bell, the meetings at the Mabic will be held from 5 pm on autumn Saturdays’ afternoons. At the conclusion of the event there will be the participation of a Japanese artist who will perform a demonstration of traditional art.

This is the calendar of meetings:

Saturday 21st September 2019, 5.00 pm: Kakutōgi. Traditional sports of Japan.

Saturday 5th October 2019, 5.00 pm: Shintō to Bukkyō. Shintoism and Buddhism, Japanese           religions.

Saturday 19th October 2019, 5.00 pm: Chōkoku. Japanese sculpture.

Saturday 16th November 2019, 5.00 pm: Tōjiki. Japanese ceramics.

Saturday 30th November 2019, 5.00 pm: Shodō. The art of Japanese calligraphy.

Mono no aware
Sensitivity to things
Origin and mystery
of Japanese traditional objects

In Japan the word mono (物) means “thing”. In ancient Japanese language the same word mono meant “deity” as well.
According to Shinto, Japan’s native religion, all natural and man-made things have their own spirit, a kind of deity called kami (神). Japanese traditional objects are not only “useful” but they show also a profound aesthetic feeling given to human beings by nature. In Japan everyday objects get from nature not only the material but the essence too. Japanese traditional objects are not imitations of nature but they are nature themselves as Japanese artists do not change nature but they partecipate in it.
As a consequence, in Japan objects’ shape and design are different depending of their position and function in the space. Tōro (灯籠), stone or bronze lanterns of gardens and roads, have different shapes relative to their location and their maker. Yukimi tōro (雪見燈籠 ), for example, is a lantern with a very wide top part made to heap snow, its function is only for contemplating the contrast between cold white snow and lantern's hot red flame. In Japanese gardens yukimi tōro is always put near lakeside to make possibile to see fire reflexes on water surface.
Chōchin (提灯), Japanese paper lanterns, are common in China and Korea as well and they come from Buddhism's introduction into Japan during the mid-6th century. Shape, paper, color and framework of chōchin are made according to functional and at the same time religious manufacturing canons.
Tokonoma (床の間, “alcove room”), is the Japanese traditional house sacred corner in which calligraphic paintings, ikebana and pottery are displayed. Tokonoma probably comes from butsudan, the altar of private Buddhist monks rooms; it is strictly forbidden to sit down and to set feet on tokonoma. Hashi  (箸), chopsticks, maybe derive from ritual sticks which were used to purify deity offerings and are still used nowadays to bring the dead bone after cremation. Tatami (畳) , woven igusa ( イグサ, Juncus effusus) straw, together with shōji ( 障子), translucent washi paper screens, are the main components of washitsu, Japanese-style room always darkness shrouded.
Zori (草履) and geta (下駄), Japanese traditional footwear, can’t be worn in house and are made according to strong symmetry and bilance rules.
This close connection between Japanese objects and nature was explained by Norinaga Mootori (本居 宣長, 1730-1801) with his conception of mono no aware “sensitivity to things”.
Mono no aware (物の哀れ) is an innate perception by which Japanese people can have a feeling with handiworks like houses, bridges, temples, everyday objects and natural elements.
Mono no aware is a quiet sensation which hides dark and restless depth of Japanese soul.
Nowadays in Japan objects preserve their mysterious and old link with nature, a still living link even now in computerized and cemented Japan, a still living link which not even robots and microchips have been able to disclose.
